Chief Justice French

Robert Shenton French AC was appointed to the High Court as Chief Justice in September 2008.

Prior appointments have included judge of the Federal Court of Australia (1986 to 2008), President of National Native Tribunal (1994 to 1998), additional member of Supreme Court of the Australian Capital Territory, member of Supreme Court of Fiji, Deputy Member of Australian Competition Tribunal, part-time member of Australian Law Reform Commission and President of Australian Association of Constitutional Law.

His Honour was appointed a Companion in the General Division of the Order of Australia in 2010.

His Honour is from Western Australia where he commenced his legal career as a solicitor in 1972 before being called to the bar in 1983.


Justice Hayne

Kenneth Madison Hayne was appointed to the High Court of Australia in September 1997. Previously he was a judge of the Victorian Supreme Court (1992 to 1997) and a judge of appeal of the Victorian Court of Appeal (1995 to 1997).

His Honour was appointed a companion in the General Division of the Order of Australia in 2002.

His Honour is from Victoria, where he commenced his legal career as a barrister in 1971


Justice Crennan

Susan Maree Crennan AC was appointed to the High Court of Australia in November 2005. Previously she was a judge of the Federal Court of Australia (2004-05). She has been the President of the Australian Bar Association (1994-95), Victorian Bar Council (1993-94) and a Commissioner for Human Rights (1992).

Her Honour was appointed a Companion in the General Division of the Order of Australia in 2008.

Her Honour commenced here legal career in 1979 at the NSW bar and became a Queen’s Counsel in 1989.


Justice Kiefel

Susan Mary Kiefel AC was appointed to the High Court of Australia in September 2007. Previously she was a judge of the Federal Court of Australia and the Supreme Court of Norfolk Island (1994-2007), part-time Commissioner of the Australian Law Reform Commission (2003-07) and judge of the Supreme Court of Queensland (1993-94).

Her Honour was appointed as a Companion in the General Division of the Order of Australia in 2011.

Her Honour is from Queensland where she was admitted to the bar in 1975 and became the state’s first female Queen’s Counsel in 1987.


 

Justice Bell

Virginia Bell AC was appointed to the High Court of Australia in February 2009. Previously she was a judge of the Supreme Court of NSW (1999-09) and NSW Court of Appeal (2008-09).

Her Honour was appointed as a Companion in the General Division of the Order of Australia in 2012.

Her Honour is from New South Wales, where she commenced her legal career as a solicitor at the Redfern Legal Centre in 1977. She was admitted to the bar in 1984 and was appointed Senior Counsel in 1997. She has been a Public Defender (1986-89), counsel assisting the Royal Commission into the NSW Police Force (1994-97) and president of the Australian Institute of Judicial Administration (2006-08).


Justice Gageler

Stephen Gageler was appointed to the High Court of Australia in October 2012. Previously he was the Commonwealth Solicitor-General (2008-12).

His Honour is from New South Wales where he was admitted to the bar in 1989 and was appointed Senior Counsel in 2000.


Justice Keane

Patrick Keane was appointed to the High Court of Australia in March 2013. Previously he was a judge of the Federal Court of Australia (2010-13), Court of Appeal of the Supreme Court of Queensland (2005-10) and Solicitor-General for Queensland (1992-05).

His Honour is from Queensland, where he began his legal career in 1977 when admitted to the bar. He was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1988.
